Look, I'm all for a little more resilience at 1st level, but c'mon. Con score + max hit die +Con bonus is ridiculous. If I throw 1st level critters at you (kobolds, orcs, wolves, etc.) you guys will be mowing down dozens of them before you get close to being threatened with single digit hit points. If you throw fewer but tougher monsters, your bonuses to hit will be too low to make a dent against their higher AC. I could just add bonuses to hit to low level schmoes and boost their own hit points, but we seem to be headed down a really weird path with that.
Con score as hitpoint total at first level. When you level you get a hit die+con modifier added to it. That seems a bit more manageable. Right?

Fine with me. Upon reading TB, these guys seem to have "mathed it up" something fierce, so I imagine they have a strong mathematical reason for doing what they do. Have you read the bit about "Elite" and "solo" mobs monsters. How their hp are doubled or multiplied by number of party members?

Yep, I know about elites and solos. As far as my research has revealed, you guys are right. It seems nuts to me. What do you think? How many hit points feel right to you at 1st?

It's all a question of consistency of game. At 1st level in 1e thru 3.Xe, you "Play scared". You could die at any time. This can be fun. This can also be "one-shot island". By 3rd, you can generally take a hit before and then decide to run if need be. Adding constitution to hp at 1st level just makes the game more consistent throughout the levels.
I'm not sure what other surprises are in store from trailblazer. I haven't read it "cover to cover" yet. But if you're not planning on throwing elite and solo mobs at us, we probably don't need all the extra hp.

I tend to like the added HP at first for exactly that reason. While I'm okay with "playing scared," I like to live long enough to get scared. :-) Maybe "Con + Con bonus" or "Max HD + Con Bonus," whichever is higher. Almost inevitably, it'll be the former, though it allows for the 10-Con Barbarian or something.

My problem with changes that make 1st level characters more powerful, is that if people don't feel that the characters are strong enough... they don't need to play them.
Lot's of people start the game at 3rd level, or 5th level. The option to start more powerfully then the minimum has always been available. But by beefing up 1st level characters so they are as strong as the 3rd level characters used to be, you are now limiting the options. That level of power already existed, but you have removed the level of power that the 1st level character used to fill.
